Next steps for publishing your article: How to choose a publishing model (Open access or subscription)

Following the acceptance for publication of your article after the Editorial process after submission, your manuscript is handed over to production for typesetting. Once typesetting is complete, we’ll guide you, the corresponding author, through simple, secure steps outlined in Next steps for publishing your article: What to expect after acceptance.


One of these steps will be to select a publishing model for your article. You will be asked to do so after confirming your country and affiliation. 


If you are publishing in a hybrid journal (see Lists for Fully open access journals and hybrid journals), you can either select open access or non-open access (subscription) on a page that looks like this:

Please note that the APC prices mentioned above are example prices and not applicable to all journals (see Article Processing Charges (APC)).


Please check the conditions of your funding before choosing subscription. Some funders require immediate open access (read about open access policy requirements).


We encourage you to publish open access if you can — it makes your research more widely available. However, you will need to have the funds to pay the article processing charge (APC).
