Springer Nature licenses content in different sets, such as eBook collections or products like SpringerProtocols. These are often referred to as licensing models.
COUNTER reports, however, do not include a field that identifies these content sets. As a result, it is not possible to analyse usage by licensing model directly within a COUNTER report. To do this, you need to combine COUNTER data with title lists for each set.
A common approach is to use KBART title lists together with Excel.
How to Combine COUNTER and KBART Data
- Download the required COUNTER 5.0 or 5.1 report(s).
- Download the corresponding KBART title list for the content set you want to analyse.
- Open both files in Excel, placing each dataset on a separate sheet.
- In the COUNTER file, remove the header rows (everything above and including the blank row after “Registry_Record”).
- Use Excel’s VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP function to match the datasets.
- In the COUNTER sheet, add a new column (e.g. Include in Collection).
- Use a lookup formula that references the KBART sheet to match IDs.
- Use the following fields to link the data:
- KBART file: title_id
- COUNTER file: DOI
- Example:
- XLOOKUP: =XLOOKUP([@DOI], KBART!A:A, KBART!A:A, "")
- VLOOKUP: =VLOOKUP([@DOI], KBART!A:A, 1, FALSE)
- Copy the formula down for all rows.
- Filter the results to show only rows where a match is found (i.e. titles present in the KBART file).
The final dataset will display only those COUNTER records that match titles in the selected KBART file, allowing you to analyse usage for a specific licensing model or content set.
Usage of Springer Protocols
If you’re interested in usage of Springer Protocols, follow the instruction above, using the Complete Protocols file from the KBART page.
Usage of Hospitals and Health collections
To analyse usage for Hospitals and Health collections, follow the steps outlined above and use the corresponding Hospitals and Health collection files from the KBART page.
Usage of Access and Select
To analyse usage for Access and Select, follow the same steps as for other business models, ensuring that you include the KBART files for all R0 collections covered by your Access & Select subscription.
